Crockham Hill
Crockham Hill is a village on the greensand ridge in west Kent, in the civil parish of Westerham. Its period stock is unusually architect-led for its size, with named houses of 1873, 1877 and 1936 all listed. Octavia Hill, who co-founded the National Trust, lived here and is buried in the churchyard. There is no station; Edenbridge Town and Oxted both serve it. What it’s actually like
Crockham Hill sits high on the greensand ridge with views south over the Weald, and it has an unusually good collection of architect-designed houses for a village of its size. Octavia Hill, who co-founded the National Trust, lived here and is buried in the churchyard, and Chartwell is about a mile up the lane. The village school was built below the church in 1867 and is still going strong.

The houses
Three named houses set the tone. Lewins, of about 1873, is by John McKean Brydon — red brick in Flemish bond with curved tile-hanging, timber framing and six tall channelled stacks. Larksfield of 1877 was built for Octavia Hill, tile-hung over random rubble with a Tudor-style chimney. Spencely House of 1936 is the architect's own family house, brown and red brick with teak windows and a mahogany stair. Around them sit Wealden farmhouses and oasts at Froghole and Goodley Stock.
Getting to London
Crockham Hill has no station. Edenbridge Town, about two and a half miles south, runs direct to London Bridge in around 44 minutes. Oxted, about three and a half miles north- west, is faster and more frequent — around 33 minutes to London Bridge.
Schools
Crockham Hill Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, built below Holy Trinity in 1867, serves the village. There is no secondary school and no independent school here; the nearest secondary is Oxted School, a few miles to the north-west.

No. There is no conservation area at Crockham Hill, Froghole or Goodley Stock. Protection here comes from individual listings, the Green Belt and the Kent Downs National Landscape rather than from conservation area status. The nearest designated area covers the town to the north-west.
What is the Octavia Hill connection?
Octavia Hill, the housing reformer who co-founded the National Trust in 1893, lived in the village and had Larksfield built here in 1877. She is buried in Holy Trinity's churchyard, and inside the church there is a tomb-chest with her effigy, carved by Dora Abbott.
Which station should I use from Crockham Hill?
Not the nearest. Plain Edenbridge station is about two miles away but has no direct London train. Edenbridge Town, about two and a half miles, runs direct to London Bridge in around 44 minutes, and Oxted, a mile further, is faster and more frequent to both London Bridge and Victoria.
