East Malling
East Malling is a village in Tonbridge and Malling, west Kent, built in Kentish ragstone around a Grade I church of the twelfth century. It holds four Grade I listed buildings in a single parish, including Bradbourne House of 1713 and Clare House of 1793. The station is on the village High Street, direct to London Victoria. East Malling is a ragstone village with four Grade I listed buildings, which is remarkable for its size, and a station right on the High Street running into Victoria. It's the quieter neighbour to West Malling and a little kinder on the pocket, with orchards and the research station giving it a character entirely its own. The Malling School is here too, on Beech Road, which tends to surprise people.

The houses
Kentish ragstone is the defining material, from the church downwards. Bradbourne House of 1713–15 is brown brick with red dressings on a red and blue plinth; Clare House of 1793 is a stuccoed villa under wide boxed eaves, with a trilobed plan of a square block flanked by octagonal bays. Around them sit timber-framed cottages at Church Walk and Well Street. Farming and orchards dominated until the 1960s, and post-war estates followed.
Getting to London
East Malling station sits on the High Street in the village itself, on the Maidstone East line. Southeastern run one train an hour off-peak direct to London Victoria and one to Ashford International. The platforms are reached by steps, with no lifts.
Schools
St James the Great Academy is the village primary. The Malling School, on Beech Road, is the non-selective secondary with a sixth form — despite its name it is in East Malling rather than West Malling. There is no independent school in the village.

Does East Malling have direct trains to Charing Cross?
No. East Malling is served by London Victoria only. The semi-fast Charing Cross service on the Maidstone East line runs through without stopping — between here and Maidstone East it calls at West Malling alone. For Charing Cross you would use West Malling, one stop away.
What is the difference between East Malling and West Malling?
They are separate villages with separate stations and quite different characters. West Malling is the market town with the wide Georgian high street; East Malling is a ragstone village with four Grade I listed buildings and a station served only by London Victoria trains.
Why are apple rootstocks named after East Malling?
Because they were classified here. From 1912 Ronald Hatton's work at the East Malling research station standardised and tested apple rootstocks, and the resulting Malling series carries the village's initial. The M and MM prefixes used in commercial orchards worldwide come from this village.
