Buying or selling a house in
West Malling
West Malling is a small market town in Tonbridge and Malling, west Kent, about 28 miles from central London. Its centre is a medieval layout of medieval buildings behind mainly Georgian facades, arranged along an unusually wide High Street. The station is on the Maidstone East line, direct to London Victoria. Vine Estates handles a small number of sales here personally.
What it’s actually like
West Malling is a medieval street wearing Georgian clothes, and the width of the High Street is the thing you feel first. It's unusual for Kent and it gives the whole town a generosity people warm to straight away. Kings Hill is ten minutes up the road offering something completely different, which suits the area rather well. The abbey and St Leonard's Tower give the place a real sense of age.
“Show someone the High Street on a good morning and you rarely have to say very much else about the town.”
David Johnston
The houses
Red stock brick predominates, with ragstone, clay tiles and decorative ridges, white-painted timber sashes, weatherboarding and render. Went House of about 1720 is the best of the Georgian frontages and is noted for its brickwork. The nineteenth-century fringe runs along Churchfields, Offham Road, West Street, Ryarsh Lane and Norman Road, with Victorian workers' housing on Police Station Road and Frog Lane, and the post-war Fatherwell Estate beyond.
Getting to London
West Malling station is on the Maidstone East line. Southeastern run roughly one train an hour off-peak direct to London Victoria, fastest around 50 minutes, and one to London Charing Cross, fastest around 55 minutes.
Schools
West Malling CofE Primary serves the town. The Malling School, the non-selective secondary, is addressed at East Malling rather than West Malling. Three primaries serve Kings Hill: Kings Hill Primary School, The Discovery School and Valley Invicta Primary.
Common questions
What are the houses like in West Malling?
Predominantly red brick with ragstone and clay tile, and a High Street of medieval buildings refronted in the eighteenth century. King Street and Swan Street are noticeably narrower and more intimate than the High Street. Beyond the conservation area the stock runs Victorian, inter-war and post-war.
How long does it take to get to London from West Malling?
Around 50 minutes at the fastest to London Victoria on the Maidstone East line, with roughly one direct train an hour off-peak, and around 55 minutes to London Charing Cross. It is about 28 miles to Victoria, and the same line runs east towards Maidstone and Ashford.
What is the difference between West Malling and Kings Hill?
West Malling is the historic town; Kings Hill is a separate parish sharing its post town, built from 1989 on the former RAF West Malling airfield. They are minutes apart and sell to noticeably different buyers, one for period character and one for newer family housing.
