Speldhurst
Speldhurst is a village and civil parish in west Kent, west of Royal Tunbridge Wells, built around a churchyard group of seventeen listed buildings. Its core is late-medieval timber framing underbuilt in brick and stone and hung with peg-tiles. It has no station; Royal Tunbridge Wells and High Brooms are each a little over two miles away. What it’s actually like
Speldhurst is a proper Weald village — timber frames around the churchyard, local sandstone, a very good pub and lanes that go nowhere in particular. It's close enough to Tunbridge Wells to be easy and far enough out to feel like the country. Houses here are held onto, so a good one coming up is worth attention. The George and Dragon has stood on that corner since the fifteenth century.

The houses
The village core is the classic High Weald sequence: late-medieval frames, later underbuilt in brick and coursed sandstone and hung with peg-tiles. The George and Dragon is exposed timber framing on sandstone footings with peg-tile hanging; Stone Cross, probably late fifteenth-century, is underbuilt in brick and sandstone with tile-hanging above the first floor. Nineteenth-century work is sandstone ashlar. Seventeen listed entries sit around the churchyard, with more at Bullingstone, Stockland Green and Old Groombridge.
Getting to London
Speldhurst has no station. Royal Tunbridge Wells is about two and a half miles away, with two Southeastern trains an hour off-peak direct to London Charing Cross, fastest around 54 minutes. High Brooms is marginally further but slightly quicker.
Schools
Speldhurst Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School on Langton Road serves the village from Reception to Year 6. There is no secondary school here. Holmewood House, the independent prep often described as Speldhurst, is at Langton Green in the same civil parish.

Historic England date it to the late fifteenth century, with major improvements around 1600, and it has been Grade II\* listed since 1954. The widely repeated date of 1212 is not supported by the statutory record, which describes an original three-room-and-through-passage open hall house.
