The houses
Be straight about this: the town is a railway town and its period stock is almost entirely at Swanley Village. Before the railway there were three houses at a crossroads; the settlement grew from the 1860s as Swanley Junction, and most housing dates from after the Second World War to the late 1980s. Swanley Village runs late medieval to early twentieth- century — timber frame behind brick or weatherboarding, red and buff brick, Kent peg tiles.
Getting to London
Swanley station is on the Chatham Main Line at the junction with the Darent Valley branch. Southeastern run two trains an hour off-peak to London Victoria, fastest 26 minutes, and one to London Charing Cross, fastest 29. Thameslink run two an hour to Blackfriars.
Schools
Orchards Academy is the town's secondary. Primaries include St Mary's CofE, St Bartholomew's Catholic, Downsview Community, High Firs and Horizon Primary Academy. Parkwood Hall Academy Trust is a special school on Beechenlea Lane.

Swanley Village is the original settlement, about a mile and a half north-east, and it holds almost all the area's period stock. The town was built around the railway junction from the 1860s. Until the 1920s the village was simply "Swanley"; the name transferred to the junction town and the village was renamed.
Are there any listed buildings in Swanley?
Twenty in the parish, and every one is Grade II — there is no Grade I or Grade II* here. Almost all are at Swanley Village, including St Paul's Church, its lychgate, and The Old Place with its coach house and stables. St Paul's is by the Victorian architect Ewan Christian.
